I’m an independent science and technology journalist whose work has appeared in New Scientist, The New York Times, BBC Future, IEEE Spectrum, and the Economist. From 2010 to 2017 I was a technology features and news editor at New Scientist, where I commissioned and wrote longform articles on how human minds and bodies intersect with the machines we create. Before that I was on the microprocessor beat at IEEE Spectrum.
I love telling people stories in print, on the radio, on TV and in person. I have done deep dives into brain-machine interfaces, the bioelectricity renaissance, the new thirst for young blood treatments, AI’s need for a body and zapping your brain into flow state. I’m also a contributor at the science writing collective The Last Word on Nothing.
My first book, We Are Electric, is now out in paperback (UK), published by Canongate in the UK and Hachette in the US.
I grew up in Germany, New York and Baltimore, and now live in London. You can find me on Twitter (though I’m usually taking a break) or LinkedIn. I’m procrastinating on starting a Substack, and I always will be.
